
After more than fifty years in the industry and more than twenty in
the implementation of Lean Manufacturing, I realize that the walls in many
companies continue there, right in the middle of the action.
Walls that separate:

Some departments, from others
·
Some hierarchies, from others
·
The hard-working class, from
the administration
·
The engineering, from the
reality
In certain cases they are only imaginary (mental) walls, in others
they are physical, real. As a result, the intelligence of the hard-working class
renders little or any result, the good employees, the creative, spontaneous,
intelligent and participative, leave and only those that cannot find something
better stay. As a result of this, the companies that continue administering the
old way have all the probabilities of losing participation in the market and
many of them will likely disappear, without even realizing the causes.
This is the time to make radical changes. It is the opportunity of
facing the global competition with energy and intelligence, with the integral
use of our most valuable resource: the human resource.
There are some cultural barriers that it is necessary to eliminate
if we want to reach the highest development levels and adopt the disciplines
that can take us to a first competitive plateau in the current business world,
just as the Asians did at the middle of the past Century. It is the
hierarchies’ barrier. That, no longer works. Today we all should share the
responsibility and also the credit for the achievements.
The structure of the new company can no longer continue being
pyramidal as in ancient history. Today the structure should be flat. This means
a radical change in the concepts from authority towards authentic leadership.
The Lean Manufacturing system is par excellence the method to change
the results in a very positive way. By means of Kaizen Events, we can proceed to
that indispensable transition.
